With CBD products popping up everywhere these days, we commonly hear the question: “How will different CBD products affect me?”

Yes, it is true that different CBD products will offer different effects for a number of reasons.

First of all, every person reacts differently to medications or supplements even when they’re completely natural like CBD is. It is always important to start with a very low dose of CBD and increase your dosage slowly.

Another reason why different CBD products will offer unique effects for each user, is because not all CBD products are created equal. CBD can differ in many ways including the concentration or potency of the product, and the cannabinoids found in the product.

Types of CBD

There are three main types of CBD: isolate, broad spectrum, and full spectrum.

CBD isolate is the result of extracting all of the natural cannabinoids, except for CBD from the cannabis oil, so these products are 100% CBD and contain nothing else.

Broad spectrum CBD contains CBD and other cannabinoids but it usually does not contain THC. This is a great option for someone who would like to fully benefit from CBD but doesn’t feel comfortable consuming THC.

Full spectrum CBD products contain all of the naturally occurring cannabinoids for that given product, including THC. The legal amount of THC that is allowed to exist in CBD products is only 0.03%, so it isn’t enough to cause any psychoactive effects.

Because THC and CBD work very well together, it is often believed that full spectrum CBD will provide the most effective results. Different cannabinoids work well together and even complement the effects of one another, so we recommend using broad spectrum or full spectrum CBD products.

How do cannabinoids work inside of the body?

The endocannabinoid system or ECS is a part of the human body’s nervous system and is responsible for reacting with cannabinoids. This specialized system contains enzymes and receptors that ultimately work to maintain homeostasis inside of the body. The ECS is where the human body produces its own unique cannabinoids as well, (more on that later).

There are two main cannabinoid receptors in the ECS, CB1 and CB2. These receptors influence the type of reaction that people have to different CBD products. The CB1 receptor mainly affects the brain and central nervous system, while the CB2 receptor affects the immune cells and peripheral nervous system.

CBD vs. THC

CBD and THC are both types of cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, but these two powerful components have plenty of differences. THC is short for tetrahydrocannabinol. This common cannabinoid is found in higher concentrations in the marijuana plant and is responsible for the psychoactive effects that marijuana causes.

Short for cannabidiol, CBD is a frequently talked about cannabinoid. Although this cannabinoid is also found in the marijuana plant like THC is, CBD is found in higher concentrations in the hemp plant. Hemp and marijuana are both plant species that belong to the cannabis family. CBD products are made from the hemp plant since this plant has higher concentrations of CBD.

These two powerful components both interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, but they have very different effects. CBD actually inhibits some of the effects of THC. THC binds to the CB1 receptors of the ECS, CBD very weakly binds to these receptors (if at all). CBD mainly binds to the CB2 receptors to cause the majority of its benefits such as managing occasional anxiety, and improving sleep quality.

Other types of cannabinoids

Although CBD and THC are the most commonly discussed cannabinoids, there are many more cannabinoids out there. Cannabinoids can fall into one of two categories: endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids.

Endocannabinoids are the cannabinoids that are naturally produced in the human body by the ECS. Two of the most closely researched endocannabinoids are 2-Ag and anandamide. You may also hear endocannabinoids referred to as endogenous cannabinoids. These powerful molecules work with the ECS and with other cannabinoids to help maintain balance inside of the body.

Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant. There are over 100 known phytocannabinoids which include: CBD, THC, CBN, CBG, and CBC. Different cannabinoids help cause different effects inside of the body. While THC is commonly recognized for its psychoactive properties, CBN is cannabinoid that offers sedative effects and can help improve sleep quality. CBN is actually derived from THC but does not cause any psychoactive effects.

What does CBD feel like?

Many curious customers often want to know what type of effect they can expect when taking CBD for the first time. The reality is, every person will react differently and there is no real way to truly answer this question without trying the products yourself. However, many CBD users report feelings of calmness and relaxation after taking it. Since CBD is still a very “up and coming” product, further research is ongoing. Scientists are excited about the results that they have seen and plenty of anecdotal evidence points to positive impacts of CBD when used properly. CBD has been found to help patients get a restful night’s sleep, promoting relaxation, and helping support a naturally pain-free state.

How to find the right CBD product for you

The reason that CBD products vary greatly from one another, is the vast differences that exist among the different types of cannabinoids and the concentrations found in each unique product. We recommend acquiring your CBD products from a credible source and doing plenty of research ahead of time.

Although CBD products are available just about anywhere, don’t just buy the first thing you can find. Search for companies that practice brand transparency and offer safety certifications and third-party batch testing.

CBD oil itself is perfectly safe, but during the extraction process, harmful chemicals can be produced. It is very important that CBD products are processed mindfully and correctly. Ensuring the CBD product has a corresponding lab report from an independent laboratory will help demonstrate if it is indeed a clean and safe product.

Varying levels of CBD and the other cannabinoids exist in different products as well, so be sure to pay attention to the concentration of CBD that you purchase. In doing so, you’ll find the right CBD product for your needs.
