Or we may think of CBD oils in their commercial packaging – whether it’s tinctures, gummies, or topicals. An area we sometimes overlook is how the natural compounds transform into commercial products. So, how do you get CBD oil from the hemp plants? The short answer is by extracting the CBD oil from the hemp plant that contains it.

Also, during extraction, there is a risk of explosion if the process isn’t carried out in a properly ventilated area. Although this risk is not necessarily a concern for the end-customer who is simply purchasing the product, it’s worth noting.
- CO₂ – One of the most advanced methods for collecting CBD oil is the CO₂ extraction process. It’s done by using a closed-loop extractor and pumping CO₂ through the hemp plant. CO₂ is pressurized to turn the gaseous CO₂ into a liquid or supercritical fluid.
This type of collection produces the cleanest CBD concentrates, free from chemicals and contaminants. One negative is that the CO₂ extraction equipment must control high pressures and temperatures for extraction to occur, which makes the equipment expensive and the whole process more costly.

‘Winterization’ is coming

During winterization, the extracted CBD oil is combined with high-proof alcohol, stirred vigorously, and placed in a deep freezer. This step allows for the fats, waxes, and chlorophyll to separate out from the CBD. In fact, after several hours in the freezer, you can visually see the separation of the elements. In the final stage of the winterization, the alcohol is removed by applying heat. Because the boiling point of alcohol is lower than oil, all alcohol evaporates, leaving only CBD, minor cannabinoids, and terpenes. Some CBD manufacturers go through additional refinement processes- short-path distillation – using heat to isolate individual compounds further.
