What Does ‘Broad Spectrum’ Mean?

If you’re new to the world of CBD then you may be wondering which product is the best for you. With CBD products available just about anywhere, it may feel a little overwhelming when trying to choose a CBD product for the first time, and understanding the different types of CBD can help narrow down the decision-making process. Below, we’re discussing some of the different types of CBD and delving into “broad spectrum CBD” to give you a better idea of what exactly that means.

Are there different types of CBD?

There are three main types of CBD: full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate. These types vary depending on whether they contain a mixture of CBD and THC, CBD and other components, or CBD only.

Full spectrum CBD contains CBD and trace amounts of THC as well as other cannabinoids. This type of CBD could produce the most comprehensive effect from the CBD and is the least processed out of the three types.

Broad spectrum CBD does not contain any THC, but it is more than just 100% CBD. Some other components of the cannabis plant are present in broad spectrum CBD. When it comes to potency, broad spectrum CBD could be thought of as falling somewhere in the middle of full spectrum and CBD isolate.

The lack of THC in broad spectrum CBD is often reported to have the benefit of allowing individuals to keep a clear mind, because there is no possibility of a “high” feeling. Although, it is highly unlikely for any CBD products (even those that do contain THC) to produce a high effect because they never contain more than trace amounts of THC and CBD helps mitigate the psychoactive effects of THC.

Even though broad spectrum CBD does not contain THC, it does contain cannabinoids other than just CBD such as cannabichromene (CBC), cannabinol (CBN), and terpenes. Broad spectrum CBD is very similar to full spectrum, in that it contains cannabinoids other than just CBD, the only exception is that broad spectrum does not contain THC and full spectrum does.

Lastly, CBD isolate is the name given to describe CBD products that are 100% CBD and nothing else. Some people take CBD isolate thinking it is safer (due to it being pure CBD) but this is a common misconception.

What is the entourage effect?

There are benefits to using CBD with other cannabinoids because the varying cannabinoids might complement each other when used together. The “entourage effect” is a theory that suggests that CBD is more effective when used with other cannabinoids (this could be any of the different types of cannabinoids – not just THC).

The entourage effect stems from the fact that CBD interacts with the cannabinoid receptors of the body’s endocannabinoid system (CB1 and CB2) but each cannabinoid has slightly different effects on these receptors. Together their effect is magnified because of these different interactions.

Although broad spectrum CBD does not contain THC, it still offers more benefits than the CBD alone since it has additional beneficial components.

What other cannabinoids are found in broad spectrum CBD?

There are over one hundred different types of cannabinoids, and research on this topic is still rapidly developing, but some cannabinoids have been studied more closely and even offer some promising results.

Cannabichromene (CBC)

Cannabichromene or CBC is a phytocannabinoid, meaning it is found in the cannabis plant rather than in the human body. This cannabinoid can also be referred to as cannabichromene, cannabichromene, and pentylcannabichromene. CBC is known to work in harmony with the body’s natural endocannabinoids such as anandamide.

Cannabinol (CBN)

Cannabinol or CBN works with both the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system inside the body. Some research has shown that CBN can help with sleep and supporting healthy joints. Although powerful, CBN is often only found in small amounts in the cannabis plant.

Terpenes

An additional property to the cannabis plant, terpenes are slightly different from cannabinoids but also help influence the effects of cannabinoids on the body. Terpenes can be owed credit to the unique aromas and flavors that different strains of cannabis have and may even play a role in the varying effects of different strains of cannabis.

What are the benefits of broad spectrum CBD?

The benefits of CBD oil are far reaching and still not entirely known. Research is rapidly evolving as scientists uncover the power of this useful plant oil. Some individuals have reported success with using CBD products for improved sleep quality, clearer thoughts, maintaining a state of daily calm, and relief of temporary or occasional aches and pains. There is evidence that CBD has been successful in promoting relaxation and helpful in getting a restful night’s sleep.

The process of CBD oil working inside the body is incredibly complex. Multiple components are at play as cannabinoids work to break down and bind enzymes and interact with specialized receptors. Having a general understanding of how CBD works inside the body and the different Link to the ECS article product options is a great way to help make a decision when shopping for CBD for the first time.

With broad spectrum CBD, you are sure to experience the “entourage effect” but you also will not be exposed to any THC whatsoever. If you hope to achieve the full benefits of CBD oil but would rather not consume any THC, then broad spectrum CBD oil might be the perfect choice for you. Less processed and more effective than CBD isolate, broad spectrum is what we like to consider, “the happy medium.”
